Earlier today anti-choice legislators in the Michigan House and Senate voted to ban a standard abortion procedure, criminalize doctors for providing the safest method of care, and strip pregnant people of their right to make their own health care decisions.
Governor Whitmer has pledged to veto this dangerous legislation saying:
“ I think that these are decisions that should be made between a woman and her doctor. I’ve always supported a woman’s autonomy and freedom to make her own choices.”
This provides an important backstop against this attack on our rights and access to health care.
But, unfortunately, radical anti-abortion organizations like Right to Life of Michigan are already planning to work around the Governor’s veto power and pass this ban into law using a ballot initiative.
This is part of a coordinated, national effort to chip away at abortion access and bring cases to the Supreme Court in an attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade, and ultimately eliminate all access to safe, legal abortion.
This will be a long fight.
