Our reproductive freedom in Michigan
is at stake.
In 2022, Michigan voters came out in record numbers to add protections for reproductive freedom by passing Proposal 3. Michiganders also elected pro-reproductive freedom majorities in both chambers of the legislature for the first time in nearly 40 years. With this slim majority, our leaders have made incredible progress in protecting and expanding access to abortion and other reproductive health care.
Yet if anti-abortion politicians take back the majority in the Michigan House of Representatives, they would take away our reproductive freedoms and undo everything Michiganders have fought for.
Learn where Michigan's State House of Representatives District 83 candidates stand on health care and reproductive freedom before you turn in your ballot by November 5.
Tommy Brann will work to ban abortion.
Tommy Brann has a long history of supporting the anti-abortion agenda, garnering himself a rubber stamp from the anti-abortion group Right to Life of Michigan, which has endorsed him 3 times between 2016 and 2022. As a former State Representative for District 77, Tommy voted for legislation that banned telehealth abortion in December 2018.
If elected back to the State House, Tommy Brann would ban most or all abortions in the state of Michigan, undoing all of our hard work. Politicians like Tommy Brann should never be allowed to make decisions about what happens between you and your doctor.
John Fitzgerald will protect and expand abortion access.
As a champion for sexual and reproductive health, John Fitzgerald is committed to protecting our access to abortion, birth control, IVF, and other reproductive care. After Michiganders came out in record numbers to protect reproductive freedom, John co-sponsored the law that officially removed Michigan’s 1931 abortion ban from the books. As State Representative, he voted in favor of the 2023 Reproductive Health Act, which repealed many harmful and medically unnecessary restrictions that made abortion harder to access, especially for Black Michiganders and people with low incomes.
Additionally, John has demonstrated his commitment to Michigan’s LGBTQ community by co-sponsoring legislation to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA). John Fitzgerald is the only candidate in this race who we can trust to protect our reproductive freedoms and fight to expand access to sexual and reproductive care in Michigan.
