Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan is working at the state, local and federal levels to advance policies that will remove barriers to sexual and reproductive health care, ensure reproductive freedom for all, and address the social determinants of health.
Our Policy Agenda
Our policy agenda reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing reproductive freedom and protecting sexual and reproductive health care across Michigan. While not every issue area currently has active legislation, we remain vigilant and proactive in seeking opportunities to support, shape, and advocate for policies that protect and expand access to care. Whether through legislation, coalition work, or community engagement, we are dedicated to making progress on every front.
Equitable Access to Abortion
All people deserve equal access to safe, legal abortion, no matter who they are, where they live, or how much money they make. We must ensure that individuals living in, or forced to travel to, Michigan can safely access abortion without facing unnecessary and harmful barriers to care.
Protecting Patient Privacy
Patients deserve to know that their private health information is protected. We must ensure that all people – including those traveling to Michigan for care – can access abortion and other sexual and reproductive health care without fear that their personal health information will be shared or used as grounds for legal action.
Sexual Health Education
Sexual health education provides young people with the tools and resources they need to make informed decisions about their lives, health, and relationships. K-12 students deserve comprehensive sexual health education that is age-appropriate, medically accurate, culturally responsive, and inclusive.
LGBTQ+ Rights and Inclusive Care
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-diverse Michiganders often face barriers to health care, including discrimination, lack of insurance coverage, provider insensitivity, and lack of awareness of available resources. We must break down these barriers to care and ensure that patients of all gender identities and sexual orientations can access high-quality, affirming health care.
Access to Reproductive Health Care
Reproductive health care like birth control, STI testing and treatment, pregnancy and postpartum care, and cancer screenings, is an essential part of protecting your health and planning your family. Everyone deserves reproductive health care that is accessible, affordable, and covered by insurance.
Supporting Reproductive and Sexual Health Care Providers
Sexual and reproductive health care providers support the physical and emotional well-being of their patients. They, in turn, deserve to have protections and support afforded to them such as professional working environments that are free from harassment, and access to a full range of resources to support their professional and economic well-being.
Supporting Healthy, Thriving Families
Michigan parents deserve the resources and support they need to raise their family and care for their children’s well-being, including affordable childcare, workplace protections for pregnant and parenting employees, and a fair living wage.
Accountability for Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs)
The primary goal of Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) is to deter pregnant people from accessing abortion. To do this, they often use deceptive tactics to confuse patients about the services they offer and distribute inaccurate information about birth control, abortion and sexual health. Michiganders deserve accurate information and access to care from licensed medical professionals.
