In just a few short years, Michigan's landscape on reproductive and LGBTQ rights has undergone a transformative shift. Our collective efforts are a testament to the power we hold when we work together, setting an inspiring precedent for states across the country who are working to restore abortion access.
While our work started long before Roe was overturned, we are incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made since, none of which would be possible without our supporters, partners, and reproductive health champions in the legislature. Together, we’ve achieved:
Passing Proposal 3, enshrining the right to reproductive freedom into our state constitution.
Repealing the 1931 abortion ban, ensuring the threat of enforcement is gone permanently.
Expanding the Eliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to protect the LGBTQ community from discrimination based on their gender identity or expression and sexual orientation.
Passing legislation to protect people who have had an abortion from employment discrimination.
Passing the Reproductive Health Act (RHA) to improve abortion access in Michigan by repealing many medically unnecessary barriers to care.
But despite all of this progress, our work is far from over. Barriers to abortion access still remain, disproportionately impacting marginalized and low-income communities. The escalating assaults on abortion, birth control, and LGBTQ rights demand our continued vigilance. We must use our voices to fight back and continue advocating for meaningful change toward a more equitable future for everyone.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan is committed to fighting for policies that improve the lives and health of our fellow Michiganders. We believe everyone — no matter who they are, where they come from, or how much money they have — deserves the ability to make decisions about their own bodies, lives, and futures.
