LANSING, MI — On Tuesday, Michigan voters elected Abdul El-Sayed to the U.S. Senate. El-Sayed, an epidemiologist and former director of the Detroit Health Department, has pledged to fight to codify the protections of Roe v. Wade into federal law and to sponsor the Women's Health Protection Act. His opponent, Republican Mike Rogers, described himself as "a pro-life guy" and was backed by a a $4.5 million effort from SBA Pro-Life America

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan President and CEO Paula Thornton Greear released the following statement in response:

“Michigan’s next senator walks into a Congress that already cut Medicaid funding for reproductive health care providers once, and voters sent someone who will fight to undo that damage. Abdul El-Sayed has spent his career in public health, including leading Detroit's health department, and he knows what happens to a community when people lose access to care. We congratulate Senator-elect El-Sayed and look forward to working with him to restore federal protections for abortion and the funding Michiganders count on for their care.”
