Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan Congratulates Garlin Gilchrist on Victory in Race for Secretary of State
LANSING, MI — Michigan voters have elected Garlin Gilchrist as their next secretary of state. As lieutenant governor, Gilchrist has been a vocal champion of sexual and reproductive health care. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, he worked alongside state leaders to protect abortion access. His victory comes four years after voters approved Proposal 3, enshrining the freedom of Michiganders to make their own decisions about pregnancy into the state constitution.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan President and CEO Paula Thornton Greear released the following statement in response:
“In a state where voters used the power of the ballot box to lock the right to reproductive freedom into our constitution, Michiganders understand exactly how essential free and fair elections are to the fight for abortion rights and access. Garlin Gilchrist has been a strong champion for our fundamental rights and democracy, and we know we can count on him to safeguard every Michigander’s right to vote at this pivotal moment for our state and country. We are proud to congratulate him on his election as secretary of state.
